How to make "light up" MVs
« on: March 05, 2011, 02:41:42 PM »
Well, the UFApocolypse finally happened and, like it or not, H!P MVs are going to be hit or miss for a while. What do we do? Make sweet glowy picture MVs! Easy to do, though it can get time consuming.

Your example today shall be Rianasu's Break Out, because I still have the pictures. Here is what I did:

Opened up Paint Shop Pro, the obscure little editor I use instead of Photoshop for reasons I don't even know (I've tried, I just don't LIKE IT), made a blank canvas that was 1280x720. Edited some graphics. The background graphic is the cover of DBSK's Break Out with some color manipulation and maybe some Random Lines 'cause I like Random Lines. Then I color maniped pics of the guy's favorite idols and added their name and did some shit and idk even know, the point is, just go play. I've never taken a graphic design class in my life- in fact, I rarely read tutorials as to how to do anything, always preferring to do my own thang and make my own style. This was more apparent 7 years ago when I was a huge nerd for webdesign and did all kinds of cool and creative things with code and graphics I don't even understand now. The point is, there's no secret to photo manipulation. Just do shit and ask yourself "Does that look cool?" If the answer is 'yes' you've done a FANTASTIC job!

Once I had my base graphic, I made each boy blue. Then I had 7 graphics:

http://liana.kawaii.nu/studio/pvtut/koolmon.png
http://liana.kawaii.nu/studio/pvtut/noone.png
http://liana.kawaii.nu/studio/pvtut/prinny.png
http://liana.kawaii.nu/studio/pvtut/rakkun.png
http://liana.kawaii.nu/studio/pvtut/trike.png

Then I took them into my video editor of choice and cross faded them in and out at the appropriate times. Fuck sometimes I didn't even bother to crossfade, it was lazy work.

That's. It. That one is a bit deceptive because the whole song was a solo, but if there were duets I would have made a new graphic with TWO boys blue titled like rakkuntrike.png and put that in for the duet part. A song like Iroppoi Jirettai would have somewhere around 21 graphics- I counted 13 duets/small groups, 7 solos, and the blank non-highlighted "noone" picture. Time consuming, but still easy.

There you have it. It's that easy! Here are some tips for avoiding Newbie Graphic Syndrome:
- Use high quality graphics ONLY. ONLY. YOU GUYS. ONLY. (Just look at the scan texture on Break Out! stfu I'm lazy)
- Default settings like "I just made everything look like an oil painting!!!!!" or "NEON GLOW!!!!!!!" are not going to be your best ideas.
- Play with the words. Play with tracking, play with skewing, play with the size, play with the layer transparency, just do not put your text over your picture like DERP. Sometimes plain text is best (there are no effects on them in Break Out aside from being closer together than the default setting) but too often people are just like "BRIGHT PINK COMIC SANS MS!!!!!" Seriously, I'm sorry, I loose a little respect for anyone who uses comic sans ms. Not a lot! Not going to end friendships! Just the tiniest of dips, as if you had just told me you didn't get Arrested Development.
- Make sure you NEVER adjust the aspect ratio. That's the ratio between the horizontal and vertical lengths. You can adjust both at the same TIME, just not one or the other. Let's not make Risako any more deluxe.

Anymore tips? Anyone got resources to tutorials on how to cutely edit things?

LOL hey make a thread for that! As many threads for as many different ways to upload your work to youtube is good. The more help we can give to people who can no longer use their beloved MVs, the better!

Dani's Tutorial:
- Make a picture in MS Paint
- Follow the instructions on youtube to annotate who is singing.
- Get an ice cream sandwich.
