THE DEADEST, but I'm nostalgic and refusing to let it die.

It was broken for two weeks after the server had a php upgrade. I finally sat down to fix it so now it works again.

EDIT: Okay so there's also a behind-the-scenes spambot disaster that's wreaking havoc on my email server as well. And since I actually need my email to NOT be auto-filtered as spam, I've just gone ahead and disabled new registration.

IF AT ANY POINT you guys want to get the band together and revive things / invite new people to make this forum a karaoke hub again, I am available via Twitter at @deathbywords. Pings and DMs there will go straight to my phone, so I can't miss them.

Basically, to solve the issue I'll need to update our outdated forum software, which is a silly amount of effort to put into a web ghost. All your existing accounts should still work, and posting is still totally enabled.

I'm sorry to slightly wreck stuff! Just give me a holler if you want it un-wrecked and I'll do it the right way.

Sep 28 note:

Board was stuck in Maintenance Mode with a setting that was keeping everyone out, admins included. Not sure what triggered the change, but it's fixed now.

Just popping back in here to note that GUYS YOU NEED TO TELL ME WHEN THE FORUM GOES DOWN SO I CAN FIX IT.

It was down for a year because nobody told me it was down for a year, haha.

(Things previously said in the mod forum but I'll repeat it here because some of you came to visit so SOMEONE'S GOTTA CARE STILL:) If something like that happens again and you care about it getting fixed, TWEET ME DAMMIT. The notif will go to my phone and I will handle it when I get a chance.

As you might have noticed, trying to log into Y!P was resulting in an error 500 message for the last week or so. This is the result of one of two potential problems:

1. We were attacked by an exploit in our version of SMF software that forced the software to overwork itself and crap its pants rather than delivering a result.
2. The forum reached a size that was breaking the server to try processing.

It could be one of those issues. It could have been both. If it was problem #1, then it should be gone for good since I upgraded the software to the most recent stable release. If it was the issue of forum size, that's trickier business considering how often web spiders try to access every post in one big swoop. If we run into this problem again, I may need to start archiving older threads or otherwise pruning them somehow. This is only a potential issue that will be handled only if necessary.

For now, I'm pretty sure Y!P is operating at full capacity again. Tell your friends it's back! Throw a party on skype and sing about it! Or. You know. Whatever it is you kids do around these parts nowadays.

I'll be back under my bridge until the next time something breaks. 8D

Okay not gonna lie, I thought "Y!P Foreskin" halfway through titling this, so let's just get the immaturity out of the way here. PUNS. Ha.

OKAY so I've been tweaking little things about this skin on and off for like a year and I'm sure a bunch of you were spoiled for this theme in the personalization settings a while ago. BUT NOW. OFFICIALLY! This is the face of Y!P.

This is your thread to comment/complain and also to post any little bugs I've missed. This is your forum, and if I broke anything, it's you I'm messing with. So let me know here! If something's illegible or leads to a bad page, I can totally fix it.

When I wake up because it's friggin' 4 and I've been staring at pixels since like 10 and IMMA SLEEP Y'ALL. /crawls back into cave

EDIT: Things I already see need fixing:
+ The login menu is absolutely broken on the main page. Not sure why. Need to investigate.
+ These smileys don't work well against a dark background. Need to fix.
+ My avatar doesn't work at ALL. D: NEEDS WHITETEXT. /shallow
+ Broke some admin functions OOPS

...Can I +1 songs about shoes even though I haven't sung here in forever?

I think a scavenger hunt kind of theme sounds like a lot of fun! Not just like "winter songs" but like "HITORI JANAI SONGS" (you can fill an album with HP alone. xD) or like "songs about smiling" or "songs about crying" -- fan-albums like that show up a lot on japanese music uploaders. I think it would be fun and cohesive to end up with a collab project that works as a standalone album in a weird way.

Or maybe I'm just talking out of my ass. I do that too.

Fuck guys there's like a thousand guys in this group now WHEN DID YOU BREED.

I don't know this song and don't know most of the people singing (HI JOEL AND LOGAN YOU ARE THE ONLY FAMILIAR NAMES). So going in blind, THIS IS A JAM. Liana gave a robot warning, but it doesn't sound like bullshit robot Kpop and OH SNAP SOMEONE JUST HIT THIS AWESOME FALSETTO NOTE PROPS DUDE I hope it didn't hurt your balls. :( But in general this is a LOT OF DUDES coming together to make a really sweet song! The blending is hot like an egg frying on a Texas sidewalk. TWO THUMBS UP WOULD CLICK LIKE AGAIN.

And this is really small and stupid but I really love the boy vocals/girl harmony thing. I always love coed vocals, like when dudes sing harmony for girlgroup songs -- it's this interesting tonal blend that's hard to get with a bunch of folks in the same gender. So. LOVED THAT. Is that in the karaoke idek. IT WAS BADASS.

Well that's silly. I want my damn shack in the woods back. /cries
...Which is REALLY me asking for a [Cater to My Personal Interests] tag. xD

And I think that my trying to make a unique experience become more general has completely negated the general-ness of it. So I'll just double around in the other direction and present problems I've had using the forum that I don't know how to have not happen again. XD This will get SUPER specific and I apologize for it in advance.
So I had this karaoke, right? And it didn't involve me in the least except I was mixing it. Someone skipped a chunk of harmony so I covered it for the sake of finishing it because the parts I received were SUPER PRETTY and I wanted to put it out into the ether. Both on this forum and on youtube, the only comments it got were people going "lol jko I hear you doing harmony there". I was CRAZY embarrassed and insulted to have such a tiny thing completely overshadow the duet-people I'd been trying to feature in the first place. What do I have to do to make that never happen again. WHAT TAG DOES THAT GO UNDER. What's the Y!P-approved way of going "I want you to notice these people"?

My other "your mileage may vary" experience was when I later wanted to post something that took forever to make that I knew would be a sensitive issue for me once I released it. I knew I wouldn't be able to handle "this is trash but wouldn't have been trash if the drums were a little quieter" but didn't want to come across as "only say nice things to me, kay? :D", and asked someone more active what their opinion was. The answer I got was "I have no idea. I kind of just slap a random tag on things and hope it's right."

And so these things exist and I don't know what to do to resolve them or if it's just one of those peg/hole issues where what I want is just not what this forum IS anymore and I should stop trying to figure it out. I don't know anymore and don't know how to resolve the issue if you've got a forum full of mimes hanging out here now. XD WHY DO PEOPLE NOT DISCUSS. D:

idk, man, I was just trying to get other people talking.

And it might be cane-waving and upsetting, but I was just raising a particular issue/emotion that I as a user have experienced when attempting to use this forum. If the answer is another healthy round of "we don't want your kind 'round these parts - go play in a smaller sandbox," I accept that.

As far as solutions go... As I said, I'm not here often enough to fairly judge the community and its needs, but I do think it's important to take an objective look at what this place is and what it needs at this point in its development. How do other big forums manage their communities? I know the VAA is another place people go for similar materials in another niche - what are the project/review ratios there? Do they have to push users for comments or is there a different atmosphere there that lends people to talk about things more openly? Is it less open? Does it have the same set of issues where people gravitate to the things they've been in without listening to others? What about the k-pop karaoke boards?

This thread has been up fox six days without any replies before mine. I don't think it's a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." I'm not going to go into post statistics or see what threads have been active to try figuring out why they've been active above others (although I'll happily dig up the webalyzer stats for the domain if you're interested in getting those), and was just giving a related example as to why I find it difficult to post. My *specific* suggestion, as expressed in my post above, was developing a middle category between the nitpickers' society and the people who cry if someone frowns in their general direction.

/raises hand

Nobody else is taking part in this discussion so I'll take this opportunity to bring up an issue I have with Y!P as a user who doesn't use the forum very regularly anymore. In short, when I consider posting something here I can't figure out HOW.

I don't want to play competition. I don't want to be told by a bunch of other amateurs that I'm not being professional enough in my amateur hobby. When I would actively mix things in the past, it would bother me a lot when I'd release something with awesome vocalists singing amazing songs and only get comments like "lol I can hear you doing harmony at -12db in the background" that completely ignored the work as a whole. I've enjoyed karaoke as something to do for funsies, where I sing the songs I like, whether or not they're very popular, and sometimes my friends sing with me.

But at the same time, I don't want to close my posts off from people's ability to speak their mind. The way the tags have been worked, in practice if not in theory, the "Sharing" tag tells people "Only give me asspats here". That's not what I want either. If something I did isn't to your taste, then that's fine. People enjoy different things. But if "Sharing" is the tag to only use for throwaway projects, then won't people skip over them assuming there's been no work put into them? Isn't there some kind of chillax middle ground where we can just talk about music without getting into complicated analysis of mastering technique?

I think also we could do with some discussion over what a critique is, in the adult and artistic way. It's received such a negative connotation -- people think critiques are inherently negative or meanspirited away, or that "my opinion" is a license to say hurtful things. Opinions don't need to be expressed in a brash way. Even if something has opened itself up for critique and you listen once thinking "this makes my ears bleed," it's important to say that in a way that respects the time and love that's gone into creating it. Why does it make your ears bleed? Is there a dissonant harmony somewhere? Is someone off-rhythm? Did someone accidentally hire out Ayaka Wada to sing in a karaoke? Even if you've been left running away screaming in the first ten seconds, there's always a respectful way to express that. Critique or not critique, there's never a reason to be a douche when you're dealing with someone else's creative work.

And now I will retreat back into my groundhog hole. I just wanted to give a dissenting opinion to spur some kind of discussion. Now start discussing.

HEY GUYS so I haven't posted here in forever and I don't know who most of you are and you don't know me but I'm Jko hi what's up.

I've been messing around a lot with synths and MIDIs (WHY did fan-made MIDIs fall out of fashion? :( They are such a useful guide!) and sang a little bit. And then I put it on youtube against a pile of clipart. Check it out if you're in the mood?

I HAVE NOTHING PRODUCTIVE TO ADD THAT HAS NOT YET BEEN SAID BY OTHERS. But I feel like it would be a douche move not commenting on this thread.
